Who would have thought after 12 long years of planning, that the first International Airport to be built in the U.S. in more than a decade would open on-time and on-schedule! The Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport had a weekend of celebrations for it's grand opening on Saturday May 22nd 2010.
Grand opening festivities included musicians from local school bands and Nashville greats LoCash Cowboys and Eric Heatherly. The first Southwest flight arrived around 1:45pm with much anticipation and celebration.
Governor Charlie Crist was in attendance to celebrate the grand event. The Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport is a stunning $318 million facility, built on approximately 1,300 acres of a 4,000-acre site. It is the first airport built in nearly 15 years and was designed to achieve Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
As of Sunday, Southwest Airlines is operating daily nonstop service to/from Baltimore, Houston, Nashville and Orlando and Delta Air Lines is servicing the destination with daily nonstop flights to/from Atlanta and Memphis.
This is exciting news for all of us and look forward to a bright future with the new Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport. The beaches are beautiful and water is emerald green, come on out and play on the most beautiful beaches in the world!
