10th Annual Seaside 5K and Half Marathon 2012 Race Day Video
It was another perfect race day in Seaside for the 10th Annual Seaside 5K and Half Marathon. Sunday’s weather forecast was tenuous after Saturday’s epic rain day during race day packet pickup and the Expo. The Seaside 5K and Half Marathon has grown from a small fundraiser for the Seaside Neighborhood School to being one of the top running events along the Emerald Coast with race spots selling out months in advance.
The Seaside race has become an annual tradition for our family with my wife and girls running the 5K, while I have the pleasure of being the on bike escort for the lead runners on the half marathon. It is an awesome event seeing all of our friends, family and local athletes competing with athletes from all over the country at this race. It is a chance for our family to give back to our community and enjoy another beautiful day on the beach.
This year I decided to put a camera on the front of my bike so everyone can see what the race leader gets to experience as he circles back through the final 6.5 miles of his run. It is an awesome sight heading straight into 2,000+ runners with all of them cheering and clapping.
Each year I get to know the race leaders as they usually end up chit chatting with me once they get a solid lead on the race and settle into a tempo pace on the run. Paul Epstein of Pensacola won this years event and he was even running with a cold. He owns two running stores, one in Pensacola and one in Fairhope called Running Wild. After we turned around at the half way point it seemed everyone knew Paul’s name. They kept cheering, “Go Paul” and “Way to go Paul.” I finally asked Paul how everyone knows him and he said that they all know him through his running store and team.
Paul finished the half marathon in 1:19:26.22 to take the overall win. Lisa Lewis as the top female winner with a time of 1:30:57.62. Many of our locals competed in the event and put up some excellent times with local running legend Jim Meadows from Seacrest Beach taking 4th overall.
